BIOGRAPHY

Derya Başer was born in 1984 in Istanbul. Her interest in music started while she was 6. At the age of 16, she began composing. By the time she was graduating from Saint Joseph French High School, she couldn’t see her own music becoming a career path and started studying Economics at Bilkent University where she discovered that music lied at the very essence of her identity. Taking elective music classes from Bilkent University Conservatory and working as an intern in Sony BMG, Radyo ODTÜ and Taşoda Sound Design and Music Production, music became her career path. In 2009, she was accepted into Istanbul Technical University’s Sound Engineering and Design Masters program, which gave her the perspective and tools she needed to make her own music the way she wanted. Along with her studies, she worked in several projects of Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra (assistant engineer),Babajim Istanbul Studios (assistant engineer) and ITU MIAM (recording and mixing engineer). By the time she graduated, she had engineered numerous studio, live and location recordings, contributed to projects as co-producer, keyboardist, percussionist, and vocalist and mixed various genres of music. While making sound design and compositions for plays and short films, she decided to focus on her creative side, which was the strongest among her skills. Her creative side taking the lead, she composed more than thirty songs between 2012-2013 and decided to release her own albums. In the search of a different sound world, she filled her living space with various percussion instruments, synthesizers and keyboards, a digital drum set and acoustic cymbals. In September 2012, she set up her own recording and mixing studio and at the end of 2013 she founded Derya Başer Müzik Yapım.

She released her first single and first video Ne Derler, in 2014, collaborating with Evren Göknar (mastering engineer, Capitol Records) and Deniz Tarsus (writer, director). Between 2014 and 2018 she released 5 singles including Kaydet (with two different versions), Ne Çok Korku, Durma and Illusion of Perfection, which are part of her concept album to be released in Turkish and English. She works alone on all of her songs that she performs, records, mixes and produces. She is also the mastering engineer of Ne Çok Korku, Durma and Illusion of Perfection. Since 2016, she prepares all her cover arts by herself, due to her growing interest in painting. Cover arts of Ne Çok Korku, Durma and Illusion of Perfection are just scans of actual paintings by Derya Başer.
